Pre-Nuptial
Agreements

If you are getting married, you may want to consider having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement (also known as Premarital Agreement or "Pre-Nup" for short).

Many people avoid any discussion of a Pre-Nup with their betrothed because they fear it can cast doubt on their future marriage.

BUT, most people are completely unaware of the legal effect of marriage on their property rights, debts, income and taxes. In fact, I have observed that when people come in for a divorce, they are often completely wrong about the effect that getting married had on their financial rights and obligations. But now it's too late to do anything about it!

Become fully informed BEFORE you enter into this important legal relationship. You may decide you don't want or need a pre-nup, but it's better to become informed before you get married.

In a prenuptial, you and your fiancee can set forth your intentions regarding property, debts, household finances and any other legal topic that you wish to cover.

Especially if you have children from a prior relationship and/or significant assets or debts, you should consult with an attorney about the benefits of a Pre-Nup before you "tie the knot."
